JOB DESCRIPTION – Shift Team Leader

Salary: £64,000 
 

Working hours:
 
Shift rota based on 40 hours per week to provide continuous operational cover of the EfW (CHP) Facility
 
Key Objective:
 
 
 
Assist Senior O&M Management in ensuring the management of the safe, compliant, and efficient operation of the EfW (CHP) Facility always when on duty to deliver the best facility performance in all regards. Also, management of the Shift Team, day operations staff and the facility in the absence of Senior O&M management.

Ensure that all work is carried out within the safe system of work adhering to all Safety Rules, Health and Safety Policies, Site Risk Assessments and Procedures.
 
 

  • Ensuring the safe, compliant and efficient operation of the plant when on duty.
  • Lead and manage the site Operations team when on duty.
  • Support the Operations Manager to operate and improve the facility in accordance with MVV’s standards and goals.
  • Provide reports and analysis of operational Key Performance Indicators and incidents.

Knowledge, • An experienced Engineer / Technician having completed a Qualifications recognised Engineering Apprenticeship / Training.
& Experience:              

  • NVQ or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, environmental and H&S regulations.
  • Senior Authorised Person in Safe Systems of Work.
  • Proven experience in an Energy from Waste facility or similar process, operating high pressure steam systems. Broad experience gained through shift working in a continuous process environment, preferably in Energy from Waste.
  • Ability to lead an operations shift team to ensure adherence with procedures and effective utilisation of staff.
  • IOSH 3-day qualification (or equivalent).
  • Ability to work shifts.
  • Self-motivated, able to prioritise tasks and work without supervision.
  • An effective team leader / member.
  • Strong communicator.
  • Flexible, with a creative approach to problem-solving.

 
 
Tasks & Duties

Ensure that all work is carried out within the safe system of work adhering to all Safety Rules, Health and Safety Policies, Site Risk Assessments and Procedures

Ensure adherence to all site Safety Rules, Health and Safety Policies and approved site procedures when on site. Ensure that all plant and apparatus are operated safely and in accordance with approved instructions at all times and machinery states. Conduct regular audits of adherence to safety rules and report any deviations from the requirements set out within the rules. Review procedures, method statements and risk assessments for staff and contractors. Develop and implement Risk Assessments to maintain a safe working environment. Review and issue safety instructions to the operational shift team. Regularly investigate H&S related issues to ensure safe working conditions and procedures are provided and adhered to. Report all safety concerns observed during routine plant rounds to the appropriate Manager and report on the company incident reporting software.  In case of immediate risk to H&S take action to mitigate risk and report.  Always challenge unsafe conditions or practices. Act as incident controller for all on site incidents.

Ensuring the safe, compliant and efficient operation of the Plant

To act as Control Person under the Safety Rules when on duty. Ensure that all work carried out on site by Operations team members, maintenance staff and contractors is conducted in accordance with the site safety rules when on duty. Routinely monitor the workplace, reviewing safety, compliance and efficiency aspects and implement change as required. Assist the Operations and Health & Safety Manager to investigate incidents, compile/review reports and close out actions as required. Responsible for qualifying as a Senior Authorised Person role under MVV UK Safety Rules which includes reviewing risk assessments, method statements, work instructions and procedures, then implementing required safety precautions to ensure safety from the system. Managing a good standard of housekeeping throughout operational areas. Report all safety concerns observed onsite using the company incident reporting software.  In case of immediate risk to H&S take action to mitigate risk and report.  Always challenge unsafe conditions or working practices. Monitor the Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) and make system adjustments where required to ensure the plant operates compliantly within the site Environmental Permit. Ensure the plant is operated at maximum capacity within design specifications and resources are employed to ensure maximum efficiency always.

Lead and manage the site Operations team when on duty

Direct the Assistant Shift Team Leaders and Waste Acceptance Operators in crane operator function. Ensure appropriate cover arrangements in case of sickness and other absences.
Represent company management outside normal office hours. Provide technical supervision and assistance as necessary for the company and contract staff engaged in work at the EfW CHP Facility. Provide effective training and monitoring of shift staff to ensure personnel are competent to undertake their duties. Remain flexible always ensuring full shift cover. Organise and supervise ad-hoc maintenance out of office hours. Carry out / supervise maintenance work according to maintenance schedules. Liaise with other company staff as required to provide efficient work scheduling and planning to ensure minimum turnaround times during plant outages. Maintain and keep up to date operation documentation. Carry out other reasonable tasks and duties as requested by management.
 

Support the Operations Manager to operate and improve the facility in accordance with MVV’s standards and goals

Routinely monitor the workplace to identify areas where existing resources can be further enhanced and provide proposals for improvements.
 
Provide reports and analysis of operational Key Performance Indicators and incidents Inform management and report according to the Emergency Plan in the event of operational malfunctions or other incidents. Provide reports in relation to Health, Safety and Environmental aspects. Compile KPI data as required.
 

Manage and monitor consumables 

Control operational resources, consumables and residues by monitoring usage, levels and organising re-supply and disposal as required.
